Van Gorder's images of the French countryside bare a Tonalist sensitivity to color and a bold, Impressionist sense of composition. The bird’s eye perspective and flattened space of "Lilypads" suggest the influence of Japanese woodblock prints, which the Impressionists sought to emulate.
