George Loftus Noyes was one of the Boston School’s most prominent Impressionists, known for his vibrant depictions of the landscape around Boston, the North Shore, and the White Mountains. Born in Ontario, Noyes studied at the Massachusetts Normal School and developed his Impressionist style at the Academie Colarossi in Paris. He painted throughout Europe, North Africa, Mexico, and the United States, finally establishing his studio in Boston. There, Noyes taught students including N.C. Wyeth, exhibited at the Corcoran Gallery, the Boston Art Club, and the National Academy of Design, received six solo shows from the Copley Society of Boston, and won medals from the Buenos Aires International Exposition of 1910 and the San Francisco Pan-Pacific Exposition of 1915. Today, his work is in the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, the Addison Gallery of American Art, and the Whistler House Museum of Art.
