Alexander Harmer
(1856 - 1925)

Alexander Harmer was born in Newark, New Jersey, in 1856. A talented and precocious boy, Harmer sold his first painting at the age of 11. By the time he enrolled in the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Art at 17, he’d been in the army and lived on his own for years. Following his studies, Harmer re-enlisted in the military so that he could again travel west. From this, he contributed illustrations of his experiences in the Apache Wars to publications in the east. In the 1890’s, Harmer moved permanently to Santa Barbara where he concentrated in historically accurate oils of the California Colonial era.
