Julian Walbridge Rix
(1850 - 1903)

Julian Rix was born in Peacham, Vermont in 1850. In 1868 Rix was apprenticed to a sign painter in San Francisco where he’d lived briefly as a boy. While in San Francisco, Rix studied at the School of Design and became affiliated with the fine artists in the area. Rix followed painter Jules Tavernier to Monterey in 1876, which was the beginning of that city’s art colony. Fleeing a weak art market, Rix settled in New Jersey in the 1880’s where he found his work in demand. Rix died in New York in 1903 following emergency surgery.
